Atholl Country Life Museum
Newsletter - December 2011
Hi Everyone,
Once again it is time to keep you up to date with activities at the Museum and our
Auld New Year Celebration on Friday 13th January 2012.

The much-needed storage building at the Museum was completed in April and, combined with renewing the Museum’s electrical wiring and purchasing the Adlib programme to record all documentation, these projects were generously funded by the Scottish Govt. and the European Community Rural Tayside LEADER 2007 – 2013 Programme, Perth & Kinross Rural Initiative Fund and the Cairngorms National Park Authority.

Several events took place to remember the remarkable life of Donald MacBeath, the Highlander whose striking image is on the Welcome to Blair Atholl road sign. On Sunday 27th February, the 100th anniversary of his death, a gathering of descendants, friends, Museum Trustees and Atholl Highlanders and a piper paid tribute at his grave – a moving occasion.
A talk we organised on Donald MacBeath's life attracted a large turnout, and his experiences in the Crimean war and his life featured in two separate booklets which have been published . The Museum’s 2011 display featured a unique range of photographs, objects and stories highlighting the outstanding events of Donald’s life. This display will be retained for 2012.

The willing group of volunteers meet on Wednesdays to continue their good work of recording and general care of the building and the collection. It is thanks to them that the Museum manages to maintain good standards.

We can record that, after dropping a bit last year, we had an increase in visitor numbers this season – a welcome and positive sign in these difficult economic times.

Date for diaries: the popular and much-enjoyed Auld New Year celebration will take place in Blair Atholl Village Hall on Friday 13th January 2012, 8pm till 12-30am.
Compere Jane Scott will keep the proceedings going in lively style, introducing talented local entertainers – Grant & Helen Donald, Linda Dewar, Gwen Beaton, Ron Greer, Raymond MacIntosh, Gillie McNab, Mid-Atholl Strings & Things and The Foundry Boys. There will be a bar and traditional supper.
